Royal Promenade Redesign
Collaborated with a team to reimagine and redesign the Royal Promenade on Royal Caribbean Utopia of the Seas ship.
This group project was made as a part of the SCAD Study Abroad Trip: Experience Orlando '24. Our team was made up of 16 selected students across varying disciplines.
We were tasked with reimagining the Royal Promenade, a space that has received feedback as being similar to a mall in feeling and visuals. We sought to redesign the space without changing any of the existing brands or purposes for the existing spaces. Our goal was to reconnect guests with the sea, allowing the ship to truly serve as a bridge between the land and a tropical destination.
I knew that based on my own experience on this ship that I felt it was necessary for us to also turn our attention to the entrance that currently felt less than grand. I wanted us to find a way to welcome guests into the story we were going to share with them from the moment they stepped foot aboard.
Our concept and story grew to revolve around the Nautical Blessing, "Fair Winds and Following Seas." A wish for good winds sending you off on your trip and the following seas to return you safely home. I knew this was a perfect way to greet guests upon entry and welcome them into the story.
During this project I worked closely within the concept team to develop my ideas and others into presentable visuals. I also communicated and collaborated with the team to incorporate our ideas into a cohesive story, as one of the three original story presenters I wanted to ensure we maintained our design intent. I worked to help identify location, aesthetic, and navigational themes to ensure that we were cohesively moving forward together. I helped ideation for the two center icons through beginning sketching and design that then was enhanced by other teammates ideation and modeling. My technical role on the team lead me to develop 6 of the facades through research and sketches, as well as creating line documentation from translating additional team sketches through AutoCad.
This project was not assigned by or affiliated with Royal Caribbean. For educational purposes.*
